Reconstructive surgery forms a part of plastic surgery which involves use of surgery to repair, restore or reconstruct different parts of the body that may be damaged due to trauma, cancer, burns or due to birth defects.

Cleft lip and palate occurs as a birth defect. This conditions needs to be treated by surgery. Surgery done at the appropriate time gives good results. These patients commonly need more than one surgical procedure.

The management of cleft lip and palate is a multi disciplanry one involving plastic surgeons, anaestheists, ENT surgeons, audiologists and speech therapists, maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists. A team approach will ensure the child will have a normal life.
